Viruses and malware: hidden digital threats

Viruses and malware are malicious programs designed to damage, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to your devices and data. Keeping your systems and software updated is a crucial defense against these ever-evolving threats.

How it works:

• Cybercriminals exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software or operating systems to infect your device with viruses or malware.
• Malware can steal personal information, encrypt your files for ransom, or even take control of your device.
• Unpatched software creates an open door for hackers to exploit known security flaws.
• Regular updates and antivirus programs provide protection by fixing vulnerabilities and blocking harmful programs.

Example:

You ignore a software update for your operating system, leaving your device vulnerable. A cybercriminal sends an email with an infected attachment. When you open it, the malware exploits the outdated system, encrypting your files and demanding a ransom to regain access.

✩ Tips:

• Keep software updated: Enable automatic updates for your operating system, apps, and antivirus programs to ensure you’re always protected against the latest threats.
• Install reputable antivirus software: Use trusted security programs to detect and block viruses and malware before they harm your system.
• Update all devices: Don’t forget about smartphones, and tablets. These are also targets for cyberattacks.
• Be cautious with downloads: Only download files or software from trusted sources, and avoid clicking on links from unknown senders.
• Use strong passwords: Protect your accounts and devices with unique, complex passwords to reduce the risk of unauthorized access.
• Regularly back up data: Store important files in secure locations like external drives or cloud storage to recover them if malware strikes.
• Trust your instincts: If something seems suspicious—like a pop-up urging you to download "urgent" updates—double-check its legitimacy before acting.

Remember:

We will never contact you by phone, email or text asking you to provide account numbers, passwords, social security numbers or other personal information. Staying proactive with updates and security measures is your best defense against viruses and malware, keeping your devices safe and your data secure.
